The Other Blue Mosque

Imam Mosque, Imam Square, Esfahan.  This mosque is the centrepiece of Imam Square, the second largest square in the world, and makes the Blue Mosque in Istanbul look like they got bored and gave up halfway through.  It was built for male worship only, so there’s a smaller ladies mosque on the side of the square with a tunnel leading underneath to the Sultan’s palace so the ladies didn’t have to be seen on their way to pray.  The dome of the mosque has an inner dome inside it, which amplifies and echoes all sound made in the centre – I would have loved to have heard the call to prayer from here, but since we visited at the wrong time we had to be satisfied with clapping and shouting at each other (juvenile Westerners)
